Double your donation via our participation in The Big Give Christmas Challenge
to support life-changing literacy!
12 noon on 28th November 2017 – 12 noon on 5th December 2017
Most of us read without even thinking about it. It’s an essential skill we take for granted, yet lacking vital literacy skills holds a person back at every stage of their life. Astonishingly, 1 in 5 children in England leave primary school struggling to read and write at expected levels, rising to 1 in 3 amongst children from disadvantaged backgrounds. Children who cannot read well at the end of primary school are less likely to succeed in secondary school and, into adulthood: 50% of prisoners in the UK are functionally illiterate, meaning that they have a reading age of 11 or lower – with 20% falling well short of that mark. Many prisoners are completely illiterate.
Your donations, which will be doubled at no extra cost to you during the week of The Big Give Christmas Challenge, will help create two Literacy Labs in disadvantaged communities in London to help primary school children like 6 year-old Jerome, who was not able to read at all, begin to thrive through our life-changing literacy interventions. Our Community Literacy Labs give children like Jerome the opportunity to improve their literacy levels thanks to our one-to-one, multi-sensory, phonics-based tuition from our expert tutors and dedicated volunteers.
After receiving our bespoke, one-to-one tuition, Jerome was not only able to read at the level expected for his age, he also learned new skills and made new friends, giving him the confidence and ability to succeed in the future. His mother still can’t believe his progress – ‘He’s reading! I can’t believe he’s reading!’
If you want to help share the ‘gift of literacy’ with children like Jerome this Christmas giving them the best chance of future success, then please support our Big Give Christmas Challenge between 12 noon on 28th November and 12 noon on 5th December 2017.
Your donation will be worth twice as much as its original value meaning it will have double the impact so there’s no better time to support our work.
