The largest area of The Children’s Literacy Charity’s work is the provision of bespoke, high-quality, one-to-one literacy interventions that take place within a Literacy Lab. Literacy Labs can be set up in available spaces within schools.
By working through Literacy Labs, The Children’s Literacy Charity aim to dramatically narrow or in some cases close literacy gaps for children and young people as early as possible. The intensive tuition is delivered on a one-to-one basis by highly trained experts who are qualified to teach children with specific learning difficulties.
Experts from The Children’s Literacy Charity follow a programme of high-quality, intensive, multi-sensory, phonics based literacy intervention that enables children to learn essential literacy skills at their own pace.
Literacy Lab sessions are tailored to suit children’s individual needs and abilities, where experts adapt our intervention depending on the needs of each child. Sessions last up to 45 minutes and are delivered twice a week for an academic year; pupils are referred to us by a school’s SENCo (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Coordinator).
Literacy Labs also provide a crucial additional service for schools, parents and carers alike. By referring your child to a Literacy Lab, your children or young person can receive intensive catch-up support where they may have missed initial phonics teaching or by supporting pupils who have not reached the required standard during the phonics screening check.
Each pupil’s progress is recorded in their Observational profile are this is reviewed and updated at each session.
To set up a Literacy Lab, a school will pay approximately 50% of the cost of the provision. The Children’s Literacy Charity must raise the remaining 50% through partnership and donor-based fundraising activity.
The quality of the tuition provided in a Literacy Lab makes a significant difference to childrenís educational attainment, confidence and participation in the classroom where children and young people will typically graduate from a Literacy Lab with the following outcomes:
- Significant progress towards attaining similar literacy standards to those of their peer group.
- Improved sense of confidence and self-esteem.
- Highly positive attitudes to learning and to classroom participation.
