Reader Leader is a cross-age, peer reading programme that works to improve and develop both literacy skills and leadership skills. It is an effective tool that works to raise literacy standards and self-esteem for students as either Reader tutees or Leader tutors.
The programme enables both sets of students to better access the secondary curriculum.
Leader tutors (typically Year 9-13 students) are trained to deliver one-to-one tutoring and support to Year 7 and 8 students who struggle with literacy.
The programme has a dual impact: the tutoring role gives invaluable skills to the Leader tutors, adds value to their CV, further and higher education applications while Reader tutees improve their basic reading and comprehension skills. The programme also provides a supportive ‘buddying’ system for tutees as they make their transition from primary school to secondary school.
Schools tailor their Reader Leader project to effectively meet their literacy needs with our range of services, resources and support. Key personnel are trained alongside the tutors, so that they know how to facilitate the sessions and to independently expand the peer reading model to reach other Year 7 or 8 students.
The Children’s Literacy Charity will partner with schools during the academic year to deliver training on Reader Leader. If you want your school to be part of this fantastic programme, please contact us as soon as possible.
