Sorting texts

Have a look around your house and try to find lots of different types of texts, such as:

  • Newspapers
  • Magazines
  • Fiction (story) books
  • Non-fiction (information) books
  • Comics
  • Recipes
  • Instructions
  • Adverts

If you can’t find these at home, don’t worry — you can use the images below.

Next, look carefully at each text and ask yourself: Why did the author write this? How can I tell?

Now, sort the texts into piles to show their purpose:

  • To give information
  • To entertain
  • To persuade someone to do something

Favourite Author

Choose an author whose books you really enjoy reading. Visit the school library or your local library and borrow a few books written by them. As you read, think about what the books have in common and why you enjoy them. Do they share similar ideas, messages, characters, or types of stories? Are they funny, exciting, mysterious, or full of adventure?

Next, find out more about the author by reading the “About the Author” section in the book or doing some careful research. Then create an author profile that includes the following information:

  • Name, date of birth and place of birth
  • Book titles
  • Themes (the big ideas in their stories)
  • Genre (the type of books they write)

Use our example to help you with ideas and presentation. Have fun discovering more about your favourite author!
