Reading Lab in secondary schools

Reading Lab in secondary schools is a ten week programme designed to help instil a love of reading and improve essential reading skills.

Students invited to take part in Reading Lab will work in a small group with an expert tutor from the Children’s Literacy Charity, in school twice a week for 45 minutes.

Skills

In order to improve reading fluency and access texts with greater ease and understanding, students will learn a set of comprehension skills and strategies. They will expand their vocabulary, be able to make inferences, make sensible predictions, provide explanations, retrieve information from a text and summarise to gain an overall impression of a text.

Variety of Texts

Students attending our Reading Lab will read fiction texts, non-fiction texts, poetry and will also watch short films without words that allow children to create narratives and explore meaning. They will read extracts from some excellent books and will investigate complex themes and ideas. The students will take part in discussions around texts and will learn to formulate and express their opinions. Most importantly, Reading Lab will help students to develop a love of reading.
