Use our prediction boosters to become a Plot Predictor! Try out our clever strategies as you read your next book.

Cover Clues

Look at the book cover, title, or illustrations before reading. Predict: What might the story be about? Who might the characters be? Read the first chapter to see if your predictions were correct.

Character Choices

Pause when a character faces a problem or decision. Predict: What do you think the character will do? Copy a sentence from the text that gives a clue about your prediction.

Alternative Ending Prediction

Near the end of the book, stop reading. Predict: How do you think the story will end? After finishing, compare your ending with the real ending.

Pause and Predict

Stop reading partway through a chapter. Ask yourself: “What do you think will happen next?” Write a short prediction and underline the clues in the story that helped you decide.

What Happens Next Cards

Write the events you’ve read so far on pieces of paper or post-its. Ask yourself: “What do you think will happen after this event?” Add your prediction on a separate card and compare after reading..
